What kind of backing is right for me?

4-ply or linen? Off white or white? Do I need a backing at all? Let’s discuss.

Choosing the substrate on which your art or object will rest is relatively straightforward.

For imagery which will not have any border, it is usually best to go with either a black or white 4-ply backing (you will only see the wrapped side of the box, about 1” or so).

For pieces with texture, or to add another dimension, you may consider the linen backing. Linen is the traditional way these boxes were lined, the 4-ply option is much more contemporary.

Are you putting a case over a stretched canvas? Then there is no need for a backing at all!
Just make sure that when you measure, you account for the folds in the corners and their thickness.
